Yanmar ViO35 — Basic Operation & Maintenance

This guide covers basic operation and daily care for the Yanmar ViO35-6A. Always follow the safety decals and operator’s manual supplied with the machine. If you have any questions or are unsure about something, stop and call us before continuing.

The ViO35-6A uses Yanmar's 3TNV88F engine. Yanmar specifies this engine as EPA Final Tier 4 compliant without an exhaust aftertreatment system, so there is no DPF regeneration or DEF system for the operator to maintain.

Before Starting

Before each shift:

  • Walk around the machine and check for leaks or visible damage.
  • Inspect the tracks for damage, excessive looseness, or packed debris.
  • Check engine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil, and fuel.
  • Inspect visible hydraulic hoses and cylinders.
  • Remove dirt and debris from the radiator and cooling areas.
  • Make sure mirrors and windows are clean.
  • Check the work area for people, underground utilities, overhead lines, holes, drop-offs, and unstable ground.

Do not operate the machine if you find a significant leak, damaged hydraulic component, damaged track, or serious warning.

Starting & Controls

Enter and exit using the steps and handholds. Fasten the seat belt and keep the hydraulic controls locked while entering or exiting.

After starting, allow the engine a brief warm-up and check the display for warnings before beginning work.

The ViO35 uses joystick pilot controls for the boom, arm, bucket, and swing, with separate travel controls. It also has a 2-way control-pattern selector, so always verify the selected pattern before operating.

Operating Basics

  • Travel with the boom and bucket low and close to the machine.
  • Use slow, smooth movements around people, structures, or utilities.
  • Keep the machine on firm, stable ground whenever possible.
  • Reduce speed on rough or sloped terrain.
  • Avoid abrupt turns or traveling sideways across steep slopes.
  • Do not carry passengers.
  • Do not use the bucket as a hammer.
  • Avoid holding hydraulic controls against their limits longer than necessary.
  • Do not perform suspended-load lifting unless the machine and operation are properly configured for it.

The ViO35 is a true zero-tail-swing excavator, which reduces rear overhang when working in tight areas. However, the boom, arm, bucket, blade, and sides of the machine still require adequate clearance.

Daily Care

Check the following each day:

  • Engine oil
  • Coolant
  • Hydraulic oil
  • Fuel
  • Tracks and undercarriage
  • Hydraulic hoses and cylinders
  • Radiator and cooling areas

Keep dirt, grass, and other debris away from the cooling system.

For multi-day rentals, follow the greasing instructions provided with the machine or call us for the proper lubrication schedule. Yanmar provides accessible service and grease points for routine maintenance.

Do not add an unfamiliar oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, or grease. Call us first if you are unsure which product is required.

Warning Lights

Pay attention to the machine display while operating. Stop in a safe location if you receive a serious warning or notice abnormal machine behavior.

Stop operating and call us if you notice:

  • Engine overheating
  • Low oil-pressure warning
  • Hydraulic overheating
  • A significant fuel, coolant, or hydraulic leak
  • Loss of hydraulic functions
  • Track damage or a track coming off
  • Unusual knocking, grinding, or severe vibration
  • Unexpected loss of engine power
  • Any warning you do not understand

Do not continue running the machine in an attempt to see if a serious warning clears.

Shutdown & Parking

When finished:

  1. Park on firm, reasonably level ground.
  2. Lower the bucket and blade completely to the ground.
  3. Allow the engine to idle briefly after heavy operation.
  4. Engage the hydraulic control lockout.
  5. Shut off the engine.
  6. Remove the key.

Never leave the machine parked with the boom, bucket, or blade raised.

Transport

The ViO35 weighs approximately 7,900–8,400 lb. depending on configuration, before considering some additional equipment.

If transporting the machine:

  • Verify the trailer and tow vehicle are properly rated.
  • Load and unload only on firm, level ground when possible.
  • Lower the bucket and blade before securing the machine.
  • Use the manufacturer's approved securement locations.
  • Verify the actual machine and trailer weight rather than relying only on published estimates.
